JD Vance will join wife in Greenland but trip scaled back.
Denmark has welcomed the trip to Greenland by US Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, to visit a US space base. It was revealed earlier this week that Usha Vance would travel to Greenland for a few days, spending time in the capital, Nuuk, and participating in cultural activities, such as the well-liked annual dogsled race.
The visit was announced at a time when President Donald Trump has been threatening to annex Greenland, a Danish territory with some degree of autonomy. The White House announced on Tuesday that JD Vance would travel to Greenland with his wife, but they would only stay for one day to tour the US Pituffik Space Base, located on the northwest coast of Greenland.
A visit to a US base is less contentious than the initial plan for his wife’s visit, which Greenland’s acting head of government Mute Egede referred to as a “provocation,” even though JD Vance will be the highest-ranking US official to visit Greenland.
Lars Lokke Rasmussen, the Danish Foreign Minister, declared on Wednesday that Denmark had “no objections” to the Americans visiting their base and that the decision was “very positive.” Additionally, Rasmussen described it as a “masterful spin in many ways, making the US look like they’re escalating when, in fact, they’re deescalating.”
Additionally, the updated program will probably lessen the likelihood that locals will protest the Vances. Hundreds of people have participated in anti-U.S. protests in recent weeks; some of them are carrying signs that read “Respect international agreements” and “Yankee go home.”

Vice President JD Vance of the United States will accompany his spouse on a contentious trip to Greenland.
The main political parties in Greenland denounced Trump’s “unacceptable behavior” in a joint statement earlier in March. Mute B. Egede, the outgoing Prime Minister, stated on Facebook that his nation “will never be the USA, and we Greenlanders will never be Americans.” “Please stop being disrespectful to us”. “Enough is enough.”
Greenland media reported Wednesday morning that several armored vehicles that had arrived on the island before Usha Vance’s visit were being loaded back onto an American military aircraft. Vance claimed that there was a lot of excitement surrounding his wife’s trip to Greenland in a video that was shared on the social media site X on Tuesday.
He “didn’t want her to have all that fun by herself,” which is why he’s going with her.
“A lot of other countries have threatened Greenland, have threatened to use its territories and its waterways to threaten the United States, to threaten Canada, and of course, to threaten the people of Greenland,” he said, adding that the purpose of the visit to the military installation was to assess the island’s security.
“The United States and Denmark have ignored it for far too long,” he continued, adding that the Trump administration sought to “reinvigorate the security of the people of Greenland.”
Mike Waltz, Trump’s national security adviser, may still visit, but the details are unclear. The BBC has contacted the White House for confirmation. Nearly 80% of Greenlanders support independence from Denmark, according to recent polls. However, according to a January opinion poll, an even higher percentage opposed joining the US.
