Donald Trump disapproved of his official portrait inside the Colorado State Capitol building by claiming that the artist purposefully distorted it and insisted on its removal. The painting received criticisms from Trump during his Truth Social post on Sunday, March 24th 2025, because he called it one of the worst depictions he had ever seen.

Trump’s Reaction

Trump released a forceful statement, stating that the governor’s official portrait with all other Colorado State Capitol presidents ended up so dist, orted that even he had never witnessed anything like it. According to Trump, no picture should be displayed, unlike this portrait.

Governor’s Office Responds

Colorado Democrat Governor Jared Polis reacted to Trump’s artwork Interest playfully through his spokesperson Shelby Wieman, who expressed surprise about Trump’s focus on state art. Wieman appreciated the President’s Capitol visit and mentioned that they continuously seek opportunities to improve their visitor experience.

Known artist Sarah Boardman painted the portrait for which she also completed images of Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and various other historical figures. The artist presented the painting in 2019 as oil on canvas, hanging beside other U.S. presidents’ and Colorado governors’ portraits.

Artist’s Perspective

The public has heard no announcement from Boardman regarding Trump’s statements. The website mentions that this experience bestowed upon her an honour. At the same time, she expressed gratitude to dignitaries, staff members, and visitors who witnessed the unveiling ceremony held in 2019.

Trump praised the portrait of Obama that Boardman also painted and declared it excellent while ongoing criticism centred around his picture continued.

Colorado officials have no clear indication about whether they will change or rework the portrait of Trump now that he holds the presidential office. The public discussion around this matter has sparked fresh debates about how presidents should be depicted in government buildings and how artwork represents its subjects.

Trump maintains his portrait’s display position despite his strong opposition.
