During the Trump administration, the DoD website removed part of Jackie Robinson’s biography because Trump’s administration wanted to remove DEI initiatives from federal agencies. The department’s removal of Robinson’s military pages created massive objection because they eventually brought back at least one of his official pages due to public opposition.
The Removal of Jackie Robinson’s Military History
An executive order under President Donald Trump required the Pentagon to eliminate DEI-related content that showed minority service members from federal websites by removing various materials such as articles and videos. A page describing Jackie Robinson’s military background during World War II and his service as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army was eliminated from official websites.
During military training, Robinson received officer instruction,n yet the segregated forces discriminated against him by assigning him to tank duties. 1944 marked the beginning of his disciplinary process after refusing to use the segregated bus seating at Fort Hood, Texas. The legal victory did not stop him from sharing duties with other Second Lieutenant, and he lost his chance to join his unit in Europe. The fight against racial discrimination that Robinson carried out in his military service proved significant because he later launched his groundbreaking career as the first black player in Major League Baseball by joining the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.

Public Backlash and Partial Reinstatement
Educators, historians, and civil rights organizations voiced their opposition when the military records of Robinson were taken away. Through his statement, David Robinson voiced his disappointment over this decision while expressing honor for his father’s dual contributions to military service combined with civil rights leadership. Robby’s military involvement merits permanent recognition.
Page content about Robinson returned to web pages on March 19, 2025, despite bordering at least one page that had previously focused on athletes who served in the military—several key references concerning African American military heritageremainr absent on public government websites.
A Larger Effort to Remove DEI Content
The Peninsula’s DEI purge eliminated historical figures such as Robinson and dozens of colleagues. Other notable removals include:
- Doris Miller earned the highest Navy award as the first Black sailor to obtain the Navy Cross.
- The Tuskegee Airmen were the pioneering Black fighter pilots of World War II.
- The website of Arlington Cemetery eliminated the page dedicated to WWII veteran and civil rights leader Medgar Evers.
- During World War II, the Navajo Code Talkers served as Native American military personnel who delivered wartime communication encryption.
Pentagon’s Justification and Future Implications
John Ullyot from the Pentagon expressed support for eliminating DEI services through this statement: “DEI is dead at the Defense Department. According to members of the military, Woke cultural Marxism must be eliminated from its operations.
Many analysts allege the removal has done away with essential military history contributions while signaling that the government does not acknowledge diverse military backgrounds. The removal of thousands of pages leaves a question about whether future students will have access to critical historical narratives.
Those who support historical accuracy and inclusivity demand the complete return of removed content to honor people who served, such as Jackie Robinson correctly.
