Carolina, the African giant pouched ra,t formally ended her hero work after seven years of employment. As part of the nonprofit organization, APOPO Carolina engaged in TB detection work that enabled medical personnel to discover cases standard tests would have overlooked, saving many people.

Thanks to Carolina’s professional work, she detected more than 3,000 TB patients, probably safeguarding more than 30000 people from contracting the infection. Her outstanding nose allowed her to inspect 100 sputum samples within 20 minutes, requiring a microscope-using human technician four days to complete the same task.Forty0 trained rats were operated in Tanzania and Ethiopia to enhance local clinic TB detection through their work, which elevated the rates by 40%. Her achievements have shaped history, given the fact that TB stands as one of the world’s most deadly infectious diseases.

These “HeroRats” undergo trainingthath enables them to recognize six volatile organic compounds that occur in TB bacteria through their enhanced nose functions. Dedicated training for the rats requires a one-year duration until they are deployed after reaching the milestone of detecting 500 samples without false negatives.

The HeroRATS program of APOPO, which was launched during the 1990s, focused on landmine detection at its inception. These rats have a light enough body to avoid triggering explosives, s and possess noses powerful enough to locate TNT buried at a depth of 8 inches beneath the ground. The trained rats operating under APOPO conduct wildlife crime detection and rescue operations as part of their current duties.

Carolina spends her retirement at a large outdoor shaded enclosure with Gilbert, who also served as a detection rat at APOPO. APOPO staff members look after her retirement phase while organizing a special cake for a retirement celebration.

APOPO continues its mission to expand detection rat programs through its HeroRATS initiative across diverse African and Asian countries because tuberculosis still poses a significant global health risk. Initial doubts about these remarkable animals turned out to be unfounded because rodents have demonstrated they can deliver enormous impact with their extraordinary abilities.
