From Nearly Quitting to Barcelona’s Key Player
Raphinha spent his 18th birthday alone in his modest Florianopolis room as he considered ending his football career. Lacking both interest from professionals and phone calls while his injury led to his exclusion from the Avai U20 team made him think his football dream was fading away. His mother’s strong faith in him pushed him to continue pursuing, ultimately leading to his playing at FC Barcelona’s grand stage.
The current Raphinha has moved past his role as a reserve player who received little playing time. Hansi Flick’s approach as Barcelona’s manager transformed Raphinha into their central player, while his attack-focused system allowed him to shine brightly. The Brazilian winger has earned Ballon d’Or recognition through his 39 games, where he scored 24 times and set up 18 goals.
Overcoming Rejection and Hardships
Raphinha needed to face many hurdles before becoming a top powerhouse in football. His favela upbringing in Porto Alegre drove football to become the only aspect that saved him. Major Brazilian clubs initially dismissed Raphinha’s raw talent when they assessed him to be underweight for their professional teams, even though Inter and Gremio both passed on him. His abilities at Avai allowed him to recover from his injuries while facing several obstacles to obtain his initial European opportunity.
After starting his European experience at Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal, Raphinha continued playing for Sporting and Rennes until finally reaching the top with Barcelona. Marcelo Bielsa trained Raphinha at Leeds United, teaching him superior technical skills and enhancing his pressing ability and work rate. The Blaugrana paid £50 million to acquire Raphinha in 2022, though his arrival led him straight into a steep learning curve.
Struggles at Barcelona and the Turning Point
Raphinha experienced two years of disappointing football during his time at Barcelona. Xavi treated Raphinha as a player who could come off the bench instead of somebody who would start every match because Barcelona faced financial trouble that increased his market value. When the young talent Lamine Yamal joined Barcelona, Raphinha faced a strong chance of being sold.
Barcelona’s fortunes shifted when Hansi Flick came to take over as coach in May 2024. The German head coach provided Raphinha with enhanced attacking responsibilities, which enabled him to make better choices during attacking runs. Raphinha evolved into Barcelona’s leader and demonstrated increased efficiency while showing composure when attacking the goal after receiving coaching from Flick.

Leadership and Champions League Heroics
Beyond what the statistics show, Raphinha is substantially impacting the team. His team members selected him as one of their captains, taking the fourth position after Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Ronald Araujo, and Frenkie de Jong. The armband became his responsibility after his teammates’ injuries because he took enormous pride in it.
During a Champions League group stage match, Raphinha secured a game-winning goal, leading Barcelona to their 5-4 victory against Benfica while time expired. During a heavy rainstorm, the Barcelona substitutes rushed onto the field to join his celebration, thus symbolizing his rise from skepticism to team leadership status.
The Road Ahead: Ballon d’Or Contender?
Raphinha’s reinvigorated form at Barcelona under La Liga leadership and in the Champions League competitions creates substantial potential for individual honor. A victorious European competition title for Barcelona would place Raphinha among Ballon d’Or nominees. His path from nursing thoughts about football retirement to reaching the status of global soccer superstar proves the power of patient dedication and unwavering self-confidence.
